It’s been a whole year-plus since we’ve been in a restaurant, but with two jabs plus two weeks, we were feeling liberated enough to have a quick and light lunch in Jennersville Shopping Center at the Two Stones Pub. This gastropub is locally owned by a group of friends, and it is one of six locations in DE and PA. I avoid most gastropubs because the food usually seems to be too heavy, too oriented toward comfort food and piling on calories while soothing the soul—nothing I can afford easily on my year-long weight-cautious program.
The six locations are listed at www.twostonespub.com. Jennersville phone 610-345-5689.
Ambiance: Our spot was friendly and welcoming, with immediate seating by a friendly young lady named Lea Anne. From our quiet corner We observed a long angled bar with plenty of seating but properly observing PA’s “No Bar Service” rule for now. There was a big selection of tables and chairs, high-tops and stools, and booths with chairs on one side.
Experience: Our server Lea Anne was quick to get menus and glasses of Two Stones own beers. Bob ordered a 10-oz glass of Evolution #3 IPA ale (6.8%), and I got the Up & Out Hazy Pale Ale (6%). Surprise! Each 10-oz. glass was $3.00! That will bring back any craft beer drinker! The 16-oz would be only $6.00. They had many selections, both draft and 2SP’s own brands of brewing cans—15 of them! They sold by the 4-pack and seemed pricier.
Our food was sublime! We didn’t order much, since it was already 2:30 pm. But we are so ready to go back! Here is what was wonderful as could be for the daily Chef’s Seasonal Features: Bob ordered Chicken and Corn Chowder with roasted corn stock, Spanish onion, celery, poblano peppers, red bliss potatoes, smoked bacon, cream and scallions, at $6.95 for generous portion with huge shreds of roast chicken. Suffering chowder envy, I thought I would be settling for Sweet Potato Carrot Bisque with coconut milk, onions, poblano pepper, garam masala (a mild curry), scallions, and cilantro sour cream, at $5.95. No suffering! It was smooth as silk, and so luscious I savored every spoonful. The top was decorated with a swirl of cream a la Starbucks style. Each of us got a wonderful thick slice of multi=grain bread, warm and crispy, with a top-quality butter on the side. Yes, they have gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian offerings, too (said this dyed-in-the-wool carnivore).
Now I want to go back for the Mediterranean Mussels and maybe split a classic cheeseburger. And some more beers of the 10-oz variety, so we can sample. It was a thoroughly first-time out experience.
Total Bill: With tax and tip, we spent $24.68, and we left very satisfied in every way.
Additional Comments: Too many gastropubs are all about cheese, sauces, heavy meats, carbs—comfort food. All this comfort—this permission we Americans give ourselves to over-indulge in restaurants—has led to a nation of overweight people who probably wish they weren’t, but who are assailed by temptations at every turn. We found this gastropub’s menu much more thoughtfully considered.
