Restaurant Review for GuGu Asian Table
Location: 938 E. Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, just past Longwood Gardens turnoff on the left heading south.
Owners: Tony and Suki, and the manager is Nancy
Telephone: 610-388-1062
Website: guguasiantable.com
Ambiance: I found the décor quite stunning, having been coming to the various iterations of this restaurant since forever. Previously, it was as Hugo’s revered roadhouse, a great place for mushroom soup, but very homey, taproom atmosphere. The new owners have invested to make this a serene and lovely décor, from the shiny stainless entry railing to the embossed wood paneling throughout the large restaurant.
There is a sushi bar, outdoor dining deck, and various booths and tables. And to add to the fun, there is a cute little robot who takes orders from the server about which table to proceed to, and it follows the server like a little automatic puppy, bearing your delicious dishes.
Service: The service was very quick, friendly and warm, and we enjoyed getting to know our server, Cynthia, who was so personable but unobtrusive. We arrived just before the dinner hours, and Nancy, the Manager, totally ignored our early arrival and had us seated immediately in the room of our choice. Our several courses arrived in the right order, quite hot and with all we asked for in utensils. There were stainless chopsticks on the table tucked in the napkin, but my fellow diner Bob got knife and fork.
Experience: A perfect experience, and one that makes me want to go back regularly. I ordered the spicy crunchy tuna roll, which was the best I’ve ever eaten, and Bob got the Vegan Spring Rolls and a delicious salad for only $1.00 more. My entrée was a favorite, Thai green curry with chicken, and it was triple-asterisked, which I guess correctly was triple-spicy—it was! The dish was balanced with great crispy vegetables and rice on the side. Bob got Crispy Mongolian Tenderloin Beef with onion peppers and a ginger garlic spicy sauce. Honestly, my meal has fed me three times so far, as we couldn’t finish either dish! Both servings were huge.
Menu: There was a wonderful selections of hot and cold small plates in vegaarian/vegan- and gluten-free choices such as bang-bang shrimp, chili-garlic edemame, vegan spring rolls, and ahi tuna tower and a huge selection of sushi and sashimi choices. There are also lunch and dinner Bento Boxes, and some nice selections for children’s meals.
Total Bill: $55.21 before tip, and well worth it.
Additional Comments: Gugu has successfully operated Lily’s Asian Cuisine Sushi & Grill in Kennett since 2012 on State Street in Kennett, and now I want to go there, too!
