Restaurant Review for
Trattoria Guiseppe 4799 West Chester Pike Edgemont, PA
Owner: Guiseppe Musso, who has previously been a chef in Sicily and Switzerland and may have a connection to Fellini’s on State Street in Media.
Telephone: 610.353.4871 |
Website: www.mussatra.com
Ambiance: A beautiful restaurant with what seems like a labyrinth of unfolding banquet rooms and private dining spaces tucked past the public dining space. We were there on a Friday at 6 p.m., and the place was packed with individual diners and various groups celebrating, as we were for our nephew’s graduation.
Service: When we walked in, a very commanding man who may have been Guiseppe himself was “directing traffic” with a rather impatient manner; and the reviews on the web described him as “rude.” I wouldn’t make that judgment on my only experience there, but the reviews didn’t love the staff in general as much as the food and price and BYOB feature! Reviewers complained of being rushed “so they could seat another party,” but we at our private function did not experience that—maybe because it was clear we were there to celebrate and linger with friends in a banquet room rather than public area.
Experience: We found the food and presentation first-class, and our host and hostess told us they often come there and love it. The antipasti were artfully presented, the bruschetta was delicious, as was the calamari and marinara sauce. I selected a dish of pasta with shrimp, and it was so plentiful in both that after the fabulous appetizers, I could not come near finishing it. My husband ordered a chicken in white wine sauce, smothered in mushrooms that again was so much food that we couldn’t even finish it a night later for dinner.
The fact that our hosts had set up their own bar with a big selection of wines and beers certainly didn’t hurt their wallets, so it would be a good place to host a party.
Menu: With a Southern Italian flair and unique sauces and flavorings, the menu is almost unbelievably varied and large, with 19 different kinds of pizza alone, and 16 different desserts. There are plenty of choices for vegetarians, seafood and meat lovers and casual diners too. The variety and pricing of the food was excellent, with each entrée available in two sizes and prices. Even the veal dishes tended to be around $15.95, and a comparable chicken entrée would be $13.95
Total Bill: Zero, as we were happy guests—but it was clear to see that it is an affordable place to dine and would be a great choice before a movie at the Edgmont AMC Theater.
Additional Comments: The restaurant is set well back off the Rte. 3 highway as a standalone facility, and it is huge. I am always very happy to enjoy a BYOB restaurant and to tell others about it. I would say it is a find, and I will plan to sneak by the grumpy owner to try it again (if he indeed was the owner).
